Sitecore Quick Tip: Knowing If All CD Servers Are Load Balancing

When having multiple CD Nodes in rotation via a load balancer, its imperative to know if they are actually in rotation. While you can check the load balancer settings, you may not have access and need to determine from an front end perspective if all CD Servers are operating as expected.

A few tricks to determine if nodes are in rotation are as follows:

  1. Create a node.html file on each server and put this in your Sitecore root directory. The contents of this file can be as simple as a text value such as “Node 1” for the file on Node 1, “Node 2” for the file on Node 2, etc. or as complex as full links to browse around the site
  2. Use discrete color coding on a homepage image. This can be as simple as small box in the footer that is different per CD node or complex as modifying the border color around an image or section
